Music

Music can spark the imagination and be a creative force for good, both in the world and personally. We teach Music at OLOL to allow children to begin their own journey of discovery, excitement and expression: it is lots of fun! Music plays an important part in the personal development of people, as well as the culture and society we live in: the teaching and learning of Music enables children to better understand the world they live in. Besides being a creative and enjoyable activity, it fosters a positive and motivated attitude, in addition to an inherent focus towards creativity and self-development. It plays an important role in helping children feel part of a community. We provide opportunities for all children to access the elements of Music: to listen and appraise, to compose and to perform, as well as opportunities for singing, class music making and instrumental tuition. Through this, children develop their musical identities and skills, as they continue on their musical journey.

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression and it plays an important role in the personal development of all.

At OLOL, we aim to ensure that children:

• Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
• Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
• Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

As well as classroom music lessons, children in Year 4 participate in weekly sessions under the Wider Opportunities scheme. During these sessions, children are taught the elements of music through learning how to play a djembe (African drum) alongside their peers, teachers and teaching assistants. Each class receives a term of tuition and then performs in an informal celebration for their family and other members of the school community.
